Ferguson tractors became Massey Ferguson tractors and eventually became the largest tractor company in the world.
Ferguson tractors grew out of the merger of the three agricultural companies of Massey, Harris, and Ferguson. The roots of the combined companies go back to the mid-1800s.
Ferguson tractors would do battle with Ford for many years in the farm tractor industry, eventually out-selling Ford. This is particularly interesting, due to the earlier business relationship between Harry Ferguson and Henry Ford. Ferguson held unique patent designs which helped bring the Fordson tractors back to success - especially over in Europe.
Early Massey-Ferguson tractors met with failure, however, but eventually dominated the tractor market after the Ford Motor Company shifted its focus away from farm tractors.
For a long time, a war waged between the two companies, causing deep division in rural communities. No doubt this battle between Ferguson tractors and Ford began after their handshake agreement was gone when Henry died.
Massey Ferguson is one of the largest agricultural equipment manufacturers in the world, and part of AGCO, which also produces tractors of the same name and descendant of the famed Allis-Chalmers tractor line.
